Exclusive Deer Tick Interview
And you thought you had a busy summer.
From a musical perspective, the bandÕs album crossed country, folk and rock to appeal to a fan base who cherished whiskey and dirt and a lack of pretentiousness in their music. Much like Lucero did in there early days, Deer Tick became the band people who didnÕt listen to Ó that kind of musicÓ listened to Ð and loved.
Four months in the making, here's DJdc's exclusive interview with Deer Tick: DJdc Exclusive Interview with Deer Tick is up: http://www.deadjournalist.com/interviews/20090930deertick.htm

Live Review: Phoenix live at Criminal Records - Atlanta
I happened to get there just as the band was unloading - kudos to them for a great performance even though it was quite early for them. Judging from their reaction, them seemed genuinely please and maybe even surprised at the turn-out and reaction of the Atlanta fans.

DJdc Exclusive Interview: Alan Semerdjian
HIs talent is apparent to anyone who has read, or listened, to his work. As a musician, Semerdjian released the album The Big Beauty on September 1, 2009. The album, which was recorded with Matthew Cullen (My Morning Jacket, Ray LaMontagne) at The Clubhouse Studios in Rhinebeck, NY, was produced by longtime friend and collaborator producer Michael Bloom, who has performed with Rilo Kiley, The Elected and Rachael Yamagata.
Also performing on the album are musicians Franz Nicolay from The Hold Steady, Djivan Gasparian Jr. on duduk, Chris Kuffner (Ingrid Michaelson, Regina Spektor) on bass, Dave Diamond (Zen Tricksters, Shanna McNally) on drums, and multi-instrumentalist Philip A. Jimenez (Wheatus).
In addition to the album, Semerdjian most recent boo, In the Architecture of Bone, will be be released in October 2009 via GenPop Books.
Semerdjian, as an artist and lyricist, evokes hope in the process - matching dedication to his craft with the gift of storytelling.

Flood is a Four Letter Word
This isn't the beach, this would be I-20 East and West just West of Atlanta (at one point four major Interstates in and around Atlanta were shut down). This make one's drive to work kind of difficult.
For a point of reference, here's Six Flags - about four miles east of the above shot of I-20.
20 inches of rain and BP - this ia about five miles north of Six Flags:
It is hard to actually put into words the amount of destruction the on the West-side near Atlanta. Yes, having a commute that is hours longer than normal is a major inconvenience, but when all you have to deal with is traffic and no running water, it is relatively nothing compared to the thousands who lost everything.
To make matters worse, the majority of the flooding happened in areas that were not in flood plains - which means almost no one had flood insurance. Like 99.9-percent of the rest of the country, those who work just to make ends meet saw their lives destroyed.
The best story I saw in the coverage was that of a soon-to-be 90 year-old woman who owns a small farm in now suburban Cobb County - one of the areas hit hardest by the flood. She was almost defiant in her attitude, unwilling to let the flood stop her.
Take a step back and put it all in perspective ...

So about this Grizzly Bear and Michael McDonald thing ...
My initial reaction was this: McDonald's voice - soulful as it is - doesn't match up well with the song. (Side note, McDonald working with White Denim would have been genius.)
Then, thinking how Grizzly Bear is being pushed/embraced/sold-out to the masses in ways that Jay-Z and Beyonce couldn't have imagined, I wondered if this was the work of the music machine to get McDonald (who has always embraced public adulation) critical exposure to become the latest artist to follow the Johnny Cash model to find an audience with a younger generation.
Come to find out, it was just old fashioned knowing someone who knew someone. Paste Magazine has the full details: here. And he also worked with Holy Ghost ...
Now, after listening to the song at a least a dozen times, I'm hooked. There are several awkward moments in the song, but damn it if this hasn't become one of those songs I loathe at first listen and then can't stop listening to. Damn it.
Maybe I'm just too jaded, but I still find it hard to believe that McDonald - a savvy self-marketer (remember those commercials that were all over the place earlier this decade/40 Year-Old Virgin) - didn't see this as an opportunity to work with some buzz-worthy acts in order retain relevancy.
Even if he did - isn't that exactly what a successful musician (or anything, for that matter) is suppose to do?
I find myself hearkening back to Moz, " ... we hate it when our friends become successful".

RIP Jim Carroll
Carroll was an significant figure in my life. His book of free-verse poetry, Fear of Dreaming, influenced me greatly as a writer.
Although those who read this site, or have seen my work in other publications, have never been exposed to my poetry (because I keep it extremely close the vest) his style and format proved to me that I didn't have to follow the "rules" of writing.
Jim Carroll, dead at 59, RIP.
Below is one of the poems that I read so much I still had it marked with part of a gas bill from 11 years ago. I've re-typed it as published. What a loss.
"Love Story"
by Jim Carroll
The penalty for desertion
is death by a firing squad.
I'm saving you this trouble
enclosed is s pistol.
loaded with only one bullet.
squeeze the trigger once
perhaps nothing will happen.
but squeeze a second time . . .
a third . . . You see
I know the games you love

Sometimes, I Get Jealous
Anyway, I have major site envy for Fuel/Friends, a site out of Colorado that blows my little rinky-dink site out of the water. It has a stellar layout/colors/content. Basically, everything a good blog should have.
Oh, and I'm jealous of their Blitzen Trapper interview.
So if you have free time, check out the site. Good stuff.

Mike Doughty to Release New Album; Tour Dates

Mike Doughty has announced the release of his sixth solo album, Sad Man Happy Man, on October 6, 2009 via ATO Records.
In comparison to his 2008 release, Golden Delicious, Doughty explains, "The songs on Sad Man are more arcane and convoluted songwriting-wise, though they're sparer in terms of instrumentation. Although my choruses are still simple - I love taking phrases and repeating them ad infinitum."
Sad Man Happy Man Track Listing
1) Nectarine (part two)
2) (I Keep On) Rising Up
3) (You Should Be) Doubly (Gratified)
4) Lorna Zauberberg
5) (I Want to) Burn You (Down)
6) Pleasure on Credit
7) Lord Lord Help Me Just to Rock Rock On
8) (He's Got the) Whole World (in His Hands)

New Lucero Album; Tour Dates
Earlier this decade, when indie and dance-punk was all the rage, Lucero was the dirt under the fingernails; the straight-forward rock that cut through the musical bullshit. Stream Lucero's "Smoke"
As we head into the Fall of 2009, Lucero's sixth album - major label debut - 1372 Overton Park, will be October 6 via Universal Republic Records. The album was produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem) and featuring horn arrangements by legendary Memphis session player Jim Spake (Al Green, John Hiatt, Solomon Burke, Cat Power).
The album will be a departure from their early work, as the band explores the roots of Memphis rock and soul. "Smoke" shows the bands maturation with the incorporation of sounds not previously found in the band's sound.
